Engineered hardwood flooring is a veneer of real wood glued to several layers of wood underneath like plywood.

Engineered hardwood flooring is made of multiple thin layers. Engineered flooring is somewhat less expensive than solid hardwood but most types can be sanded and refinished only once since the surface hardwood layer is relatively thin. While engineered wood flooring is the most well known you can also get engineered tile and stone flooring. Most engineered wood flooring on the market is mass produced.

There is no clear advantage to one form of wood flooring over the other. This lowers the cost. Typically it is a sawn piece of timber. This gives engineered wood excellent stability over time and makes it a good choice for any area of your home including below grade basements.

Engineered wood flooring manufacturing lamella. The lamella is the face layer of the wood that is visible when installed. Its composition includes compressed wood resin and polymers and then topped with a layer of real hardwood. For example engineered wood flooring is created in 7 to 9 layers where the top layer is 100 wood but the other layers are plywood source.
